Message from the President

President David Schmidly

Since its inception in 1889, the University of New Mexico has been shaping, molding and educating the leaders and scholars of tomorrow. And this coming year will be no exception. We are excited about our incoming class of freshman, and it is my distinct honor to welcome you and your families as members of the UNM community.

As the flagship university for the state of New Mexico, UNM offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate programs serving more than 32,000 students across the state. To support each of the world class programs at UNM are teams of dedicated faculty and staff who are ready and waiting to lead our students on their quest for academic excellence.

UNM boasts many unique characteristics and distinct cultural diversity. In an effort to maintain this tradition, UNM has a host of student groups and activities that serve to nurture each student as an individual. Through freshman seminar classes, extra-curricular activities, student government, and research projects, students are encouraged to identify their individual interests as they select a major field of study in one of our numerous academic programs.
