Freshman Instructions

Freshman Family Day
Sunday, August 24
4:00 P.M.

  • It is past the deadline to signup online. However, you may still participate whether you are a freshman or parent/guest. Please follow the instructions included below.
General Information
Students should arrive by 2:45 to pick up their T-shirts in the Center for the Arts/Popejoy Hall lobby. Late arrival means you will not receive a T-shirt or be seated with other freshmen.
Freshmen and their guests will not be seated together.
  • These are the only instructions you will receive. Please read them carefully.
  • Tickets will not be required for either freshmen or their guests.
  • Freshmen report to the Center for the Arts/Popejoy Hall lobby at 2:45 p.m. for T-shirt distribution.
  • After you receive your T-shirt, go directly to Popejoy Hall and be seated.
  • Guests/family accompanying should arrive by 3:00-3:30 and go to the Student Union Building (SUB) Ballroom for information and a pre-presentation ceremony. Most parents/guests will not be sitting in Popejoy Hall due to the number of freshmen we have, but the Student Union Ballroom, the Student Union Theater, and Keller Hall have seating for parents where the entire program is livecast. You may join your student after the ceremony for festivities at the Duck Pond.

Quick Notes:

  • No cell phones or pagers - we ask that you switch off phones and pagers during the ceremony.
  • Food and drink, including closed or sealed containers and bottles of water, are not allowed inside Popejoy Hall.
  • Parking information is available by clicking on the maps and parking menu option on the left.
  • Freshmen or guests with special needs should promptly notify the Office of the University Secretary at (505) 277-4664 to request appropriate accomodations (unless assistance has already been requested while completing the online sign-up form).
  • T-shirts will be distributed at 2:45 p.m. prior to the ceremony. All students must wear this T-shirt before entering Popejoy Hall.
Academic Protocol

Convocation is a special event for all involved. We ask that you show respect for everyone who shares in the experience by creating an occasion that will appropriately highlight your achievements. The university ceremony is a dignified program governed by academic tradition, overall good manners, and state and local laws. Therefore, possession of alcoholic beverages or materials that may disrupt the ceremony are prohibited.
